Leaving no doubt as to its rich heritage, the new Ford GT was inspired by the all-conquering GT40s that beat Ferrari at Le Mans and dominated the famed 24-hour race from 1966 through 1969. Far more than a mere design throwback, the new Ford GT was a true ‘supercar’ and capable of excelling in every possible discipline.
Built using space-age materials and construction technologies, each GT was produced in five distinct stages with initial assembly at Norwalk, Ohio’s Mayflower Vehicle Systems, paint by Saleen Special Vehicles in Troy, Michigan, engine assembly at Ford’s Romeo, Michigan engine plant and then installation of the engine, transaxle, and interior finishing at Ford’s Wixom, Michigan plant. Interestingly, the Ford GT was the last vehicle project to be competed at Wixom and demand has far outstripped supply.
While capable of truly blistering performance including a 205-mph top speed, these cars are also renowned for their deceptive practicality in everyday traffic with a light clutch and the interior, which pays homage to the original GT40, is complete with leather-trimmed carbon fiber seats, electric windows, and air-conditioning. Unlike its 1960s predecessor, however, the GT interior is remarkably comfortable with ample space for taller drivers. Of course, the GT’s raison d’etre was extreme performance, with the cars perfected under the watchful guidance of none other than Carroll Shelby.
For 2006, marking the 50th Anniversary of the GT40’s first Le Mans triumph, Ford added the special, limited-edition Heritage paint scheme to the modern GT. Recalling the famous JW Automotive/Gulf Oil livery of the Le Mans-winning GT40s of 1968-69, the option was officially known as “Heritage Paint Livery Package (68G),” comprising Heritage Blue Clearcoat with Epic Orange racing stripes adorning the hood, roof, and rear deck lid, plus white vinyl roundels on the doors, hood, and decklid. The Heritage package was available only in 2006 and specified on only 343 cars at a cost of $13,000 – including this stellar example, car Number 14 of the Heritage Edition series. The product of a two-year search for the ultimate car of its kind, this Heritage Edition Ford GT was acquired by the consignor in 2014. As offered, it is an exceptionally original vehicle in “like new” condition with only an approximate 110 miles of use at the time of writing. It was specially commissioned for the first owner with serial number 000040, in commemoration of the original Ford GT40 racecars of the 1960s.
Remaining in stunning, factory-original condition, it benefits from strictly limited use and meticulous preservation and care, having never seen water and always cleaned and detailed to museum-quality standards. Additionally, this GT is 1 of only an estimated 10 examples produced with the four commonly seen options. Amenities are plentiful and include air-conditioning and power-assisted brakes, power door locks, power seats, power steering and power windows. Accompanied by excellent documentation including the original factory window details sheet and Ford Motor Company certification, this incredible Ford GT also includes all factory-issued books and manuals in their original storage pouch, plus a tool kit, storage bags, an extra key fob, factory number-decal kit, custom car cover and an elaborate 21-page booklet including model history, specifications and details specific to this vehicle. Truly, this 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition stands as “The Pace Car For An Entire Company,” as advertised by the factory when new.
