Prior to the War Between the States, there were a number of abolitionists involved in the practice of helping African slaves escape from their masters to freedom in Canada. A number of private individuals comprised this Underground Railroad helping these oppressed people find their way to a new life. In order to signal escaping slaves where a safe house was located, monuments or statuettes such as this one was placed near the front entrance to the property. This is a c. 1960s replica cast in aluminum of one of those historic monuments. Hand-painted, the base has been left in natural finish. 47" H on a 10" x 10" base. LOCAL PICKUP ONLY!
