1937 Miller-Gulf Vintage Race Cars Short Film

In this short film, Steve Truchan, a renowned car restorer from Gary, Indiana, delves into the captivating story of the only two remaining 1937 Miller-Gulf race cars. These rare cars, restored by Truchan, are now heading to auction. Designed by legendary engineer Harry Miller, they feature innovative engineering, including a four-cylinder engine originally meant for aircraft, a transaxle, independent suspension, and an early disc brake system.

Miller built two versions: the first, Chassis 001, with side tube radiators, and the second, Chassis 002, with a front-mounted radiator. Despite their advanced designs, these cars faced challenges due to overheating issues from the use of Gulf’s 81-octane gasoline, which limited compression ratios and performance. The remaining cars are highly distinctive, with cam housings, blocks, and crankcases constructed from alloy castings and an operational aircraft-style shotgun shell starter still featured on Chassis 001.

After years of dormancy and incomplete restoration, both vehicles have been carefully revived, preserving their originality and historical significance. These two legendary cars—one almost entirely original—represent a unique and irreplaceable piece of racing history. Their appearance together at auction presents a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire the first and final versions of Miller’s Gulf masterpieces.
