Mercury stated to the world that its whole goal was to design a car for motoring comfort for the general public. However, the Monterey Special Hardtop rose to the top as it was engineered for driving ease and relaxation to get the driver the most out of their car, and sales proved that. The Monterey sold close to 80,000 units and came in as the best-selling Mercury of the year, making it one of the most loved Mercury’s of the 50’s.
This 1954 Monterey Special Hardtop has been beautifully brought back to life with a full restoration. It wears an eye-catching period correct Siren Red with a white roof. All of the chrome was restored back to a brilliant shine, which combines with the rest of the body to capture the essence of the classic cars of the 1950s. Riding on steel wheels with full wheel discs with the Roman god Mercury logo and Firestone whitewall tires, it smoothly takes its occupants down the road. The Montery's classic appearance it’s helped by the redesigned front end that features dual tier bullet nose front bumpers. Mercury used the new year to introduce two new features to the rear of the car, which were a wraparound rear window and wrap around taillights, which helped warn drivers from all angles when the brakes and turn singles were applied.
The restoration work is easily seen in the interior as well, as the seats and door panels were upholstered with a new two-tone red and white leatherette. The simple cream and black dashboard keeps the attention on the proper working gauges. The dash is all filled with dealer options that included an AM radio and chrome ringed clock. The trunk features a black rubber floor mat and comes with a full-size spare tire, jack and lung wrench.
Propelling this Monterey Special along is the restored V-8 engine with factory performance equipment that was added to all the Mercury’s for 1954. The engine now came with a four-barrel carburetor. Even with its long wheel-base and large appearance, ’54 Mercury’s were easy on curves and corners thanks to innovative suspension advancements.
The Special hardtop was the best-selling Mercury model out of the five body styles that were offered for 1954, which is not hard to believe as evidenced by its appearance and advanced mechanical engineering. Ready to take on its next adventure with its striking restoration and universally loved exterior color of Siren Red, this Monterey Special Hardtop would fit right in among any enthusiast's garage.
