Introduced in 1939, the Mercury brand was the combination of Edsel Ford and his design teams' ideas to market a car to compete with the medium-priced cars such as Buick and Oldsmobile. Styling came from both the Deluxe Fords and Lincoln Zephyrs and with a wheelbase length between the two, it was only right that the price reflected that as well. The mid-level luxury vehicle was an immediate success selling over 70,000 units in its first year. Since it was such a tremendous success, little was changed for Mercury’s second go around in 1940. Front end styling was freshened and like the Ford’s for the year, convertibles were equipped with vacuum-operated tops. Mercury would go on to sell 80,000 units that year, besting its previous year. Even with the sales success, less than 10,000 people opted for the Club Convertible.

What should come as no surprise, being in Ron Thorne’s Collection this 1940 Mercury Club Convertible received a second life with its period-correct body-off restoration. The restoration covered all aspects, including the engine. The 95 horsepower Flathead V-8 was mechanically and aesthetically gone through being equipped with period correct parts and features and can achieve speeds over 90 mph. Painted in a correct Lyon Blue that seems to turn to a subtle purple when the sun hits it just right, and with its long front end and distinct curves throughout, this Club Convertible is sure to attract attention wherever it goes. During the restoration, a new tan convertible top was tightly fitted and goes up and down with the ease of a button. Adding to this low production Convertible's rarity are all the dealer options that can be seen on the exterior. It comes with an extended center grille guard, dual fog lights, General Electric spotlight, side view mirrors and a draft deflector. Helping tie in the overall appearance, this Mercury Eight sits on steel wheels with full wheel discs and Firestone whitewall tires.

Mercury’s design teamwork is on full display in the interior with a delightful two-tone robin egg blue and navy blue dashboard that brightens the occupants experience. The bench seats are newly upholstered in a period correct saddle brown leather. Blending in with the dash and leather, it boasts light grey faux wood that frame the windows and windshield. Notable Interior options include the first-year column mounted three-speed manual transmission shifter, radio, clock, and heater. Mechanically sound across the board and comfortably capable of seating five passengers, this Mercury Club Convertible, with its touch of a button top-down capabilities, would be an ideal choice for a causal cruise or summer evening drive.
