When people typically think of hot rods or custom builds, many imagine old, classic, or modern American cars that have been cut, chopped and channeled to achieve higher speeds and a unique and personalized look. The bodies are almost always modified in some way, irreversably altering the original stock body. It is easy to look at Ron Thorne's collection and notice almost all of his cars have been restored back to their period correct specs or left in their original forms, but that isn’t the case for two outliars in the group, one of those being this Ford Deluxe Coupe. Referred to as a mild custom because the body was unmodified, but the engine has been dressed up with multiple performance and speed parts that turn it into a red rocket on the road.

Mr. Thorne acquired the car from a longtime friend that restored the car to what it is today. The history before restoration is unknown, but after its restoration in the early 2000’s, it lived its life in the dry summers of California and Arizona. The all-steel body was equipped with fender skirts in the rear and was painted an eye-catching Vermilion Red. The windows have been tinted and the car is equipped with dual side mirrors and dual blue dot taillights.

Under the hood is where this Coupe gets its custom twist. At the heart is a 59A Ford Flathead V-8 engine that has been dressed up with matching Vermilion red Offenhauser cylinder heads and a chrome alternator. Added speed equipment includes a four-barrel carburetor, high compression heads, Offenhauser intake manifold, Mallory ignition, and a modern 12-volt fan to prevent overheating. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed manual transmission and the rippling sound of the upgraded Flathead can be heard through the dual chrome exhaust pipes.

The interior is done in period correct cloth upholstery that comfortably seats two and a custom painted dark mahogany shade dashboard and trim around the window. It features dealer options like a glove box clock, AM radio, and Deluxe banjo steering wheel. The trunk has been custom fitted with new carpet, felt walls, and a hidden Ford logo drop down door that houses the spare tire.

What makes this mild custom truly special is its original look and feel inside the cabin, but once the key is turned, everyone will quickly realize this is not your typical classic V-8 Ford.
