With Standard-Triumph’s release of the new Herald in 1959, there was a desire to capture a sportier, younger segment of this market. Creating this new bread-and-butter Saloon had been a bit of a chore, made considerably easier by employing the talents of Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti. This award-winning designer was able to transform a stodgy sedan into a rather attractive four-passenger convertible with stunning results. Christened “Vitesse” it was immediately recognizable from the front by its canted headlights, similar to Rolls-Royce and Bentley Continentals of the era.

This beautiful Triumph Vitesse is one of approximately 700 special edition Sports 6 convertibles produced in the Standard’s Coventry shops. It was shipped new with left-hand-drive to the United States and carried an original MSRP in the $2,500 range. Treated to a full nut and bolt restoration from 2015 to 2016, it has been exercised on a regular basis but still shows few miles since completion. This Vitesse is sure to be welcomed at any British motorcar event and is presented in turnkey condition. Finished in Ebony Black with bucket seats covered in red upholstery with walnut dashboard and door cap trim, it is an impressive sight. The cloth convertible top shows minor stains and age-appropriate wear. To access the engine the entire front clip, hood and fenders, are hinged at the front which makes routine maintenance and servicing a breeze. Adding to the pep of this performer are the dual SU carbs, coupled through the durable engine to the overdrive gearbox, transforming this Triumph into an open-top rally-type car. Ready to go, thanks to its restoration, you will feel equally as comfortable on a weekend jaunt in the countryside or rolling onto the show field to display this rare automobile.
