Founded in 1905 by Herbert Austin, Austin Motor Company Limited was a British manufacturer that specialized in small fuel-efficient vehicles that had a distinctive and unique look to them. Eventually, they would merge with Morris Motors Limited in 1952 but still operate as a sole company. That same year they merged; they introduced a new model known as the Austin A40 Somerset. The small, but mighty Somerset replaced the A40 Devon and, with both being body-on-frame cars, they were comparable in size. The Somerset shared a number of components with its predecessor, but ultimately the Somerset would gain more horsepower and find a higher top-end speed.

This rarely seen 1953 Austin A40 Somerset Convertible features the new-for-the-year “Transatlantic” body style with flowing lines from the front to the rear. Benefitting from a nice comprehensive restoration, the exterior is painted in two-tone Rolls-Royce silver-gray metallic and black. The black cloth top is reported to be in good condition and is accompanied by a black tonneau cover and boot cover. Under the hood, one will be greeted with an array of goodies, as an MGB engine conversion with an A-H 100 BNI 4:11 rear set has already been placed in the engine bay. Along with the engine upgrade, a new Moss cylinder head, Weber carburetor, Malory ignition, and aluminum valve covers have been added.

In total, it is reported that over 173,000 Somersets were produced, but only 7,243 were convertibles. Only accounting for four percent of total production, today there are far fewer, as this is 1 of only 19 known examples to be restored and in running condition. Rarely seen and guaranteed to draw attention, this 1953 Austin A40 Somerset Convertible would make a unique addition to any and all collections.
