Wasting no time after the end of World War II, the South Bend, Indiana company Studebaker, introduced an all-new pickup truck in 1949. A part of the 2R series, the new pickups came rolling out looking decades more advanced than their pre-war M Series predecessors. Raymond Loewy appointed styling chief, Robert Bourke with the task of making the 2R appealing enough to buyers to choose them over their competitors Ford, GM and Dodge. Bourke gave the new pickups a more rounded look that enhanced its streamlined appeal. Of all the changes, the most noticeable and dramatic styling cue was one that wasn’t even added by the design team but rather subtracted. The exterior running boards were removed from the outside and tucked under the door.

A recipient of a comprehensive restoration, this 1951 Studebaker 2R5 is everything one could want from a vintage pickup. The body panels are straight and true, and the driver and passenger doors close and open with no catch. The rotary locks, another Studebaker feature, hold the doors secure and the windows roll up and down with ease. The pickup bed is clean and, since the restoration, appears to have never been loaded. Adding to its appeal and overall length, it features paint-matched front and rear bumpers. The cabin comes with a single bench seat and has also been wonderfully restored. The dash is simple but efficient, with a three-speed manual shifter mounted to the column. Under the hood, the 169-cubic-inch engine is presented in a deep olive green topped by an oil bath air cleaner. Since acquired by The Rockhound Collection, it has been sparingly used, only on short brisk drives to keep proper maintenance throughout. With the recent interest in light-duty pickups, this unique and handsome Studebaker is one truck that will stand out in the crowd, while providing pleasure from its performance and stylish looks.
