The 1949-51 Ford models, the first all-new cars designed and produced by the Dearborn giant after World War II, are collectively known by legions of today’s enthusiasts as the “shoe-box” Fords. Their adaptation of the classic “three-box” design was considered very modern at the time with fully integrated front and rear fenders, smooth body sides, and relatively low stance, providing a fresh look and a welcome break from the past. Engines remained essentially unchanged, as did the manual transmission, but the addition of a new automatic transmission, called “Ford-O-Matic” in 1951 brought greater ease of operation and finally brought Ford in line with its competitors. When the new car debuted in 1949, it was an instant hit with the public. Production and sales increased nearly 50 percent from the previous year and this positive sales trend continued into 1950.

Nicely restored back to its original appearance, this 1951 Ford Custom Deluxe Convertible is finished in a classic Ford Slate Blue. Its style is simple but elegant thanks to its rounded lines and curves throughout and dual bullet nose front bumper with bumper guards. Other exterior features include wide whitewall tires with flashy chrome wheels, a black power top, and a matching boot top cover. The interior, with seating for five, is restored back to a nice two-tone red and black leather-like upholstery with matching door panels and carpet. The instrument gauges and pods are placed elegantly in the lovely red dash that matches the upholstery. Four roll-up windows with original Ford script safety glass can be seen, as well as a Magic Air heater under the dash. Loved by almost everyone, thanks to their easy maintenance and thrilling Ford power, the flathead V-8 engine has also been sorted, leaving it in running shape. Nicely restored and well-cared-for while in The Rockhound Collection, this universally loved Custom Deluxe Convertible is set to hand out smiles to everyone admiring it on or off the road.
