Introduced in 1939, the Mercury brand was the combination of Edsel Ford and his design teams' ideas to market a car to compete with medium-priced cars such as Buick and Oldsmobile. Styling came from both the Deluxe Fords and Lincoln Zephyrs and with a wheelbase length between the two, it was only right that the price reflected that as well. The mid-level luxury vehicle was an immediate success selling over 70,000 units in its first year. Since it was such a tremendous success, little was changed for Mercury’s second go-around in 1940. Front end styling was freshened and like the Fords for the year, convertibles were equipped with vacuum-operated tops. Mercury would go on to sell 80,000 units that year, besting its previous year. Even with the sales success, less than 10,000 people opted for the Club Convertible model and even fewer would claim the 09A four-door Convertible Sedan as their own. By the end of 1940, a mere 980 Mercurys became the Convertible Sedan, such as this example here, making it one of the most desirable models from the 1940 production year.

Sporting a body off-the-frame restoration, this 1940 Mercury Eight 09A Convertible Sedan comes with a charming repaint in its M-1724 black and presents remarkably well. The Edsel Ford-led design is on full display with its rounded yet pointed front end and flanking chrome grilles. The body has a single chrome strip that runs the length of the car, resulting in a stately look. Its appearance is also enhanced by its newer period-correct Firestone wide whitewall tires and tan convertible top, which comes with a brown boot cover that matches the interior. The interior comes with all-new modern leatherette brown upholstery on the seats and door panels, which combines with the Folkstone Grey and navy-blue dashboard particularly well. Comfortably seating four, it comes with modern-day lap seat belts.

A look under the hood will reveal this classic Ford’s V-8 engine has been upgraded with Edelbrock cylinder heads, a two-barrel intake set-up, and all new spark plugs with yellow wiring. Producing a smooth 95 horsepower with a column-mounted shifter operating the three-speed manual transmission, this low-production Mercury Eight 09A four-door Convertible offers its next owner plenty of power and fun to enjoy a night out cruising around town.
