Noted as one of Chevrolets most historic vehicles designed by Vice President of Design, Bill Mitchell, the 1962 Impala has been an American legend for decades. The early ‘60s Impala coupes are considered some of the most desirable muscle cars on the market, and in a custom pro-street form, that level of desire can go through the roof. This custom 1962 Impala Bubble Top is a breathtaking sight to see from top to bottom. McConnell decided that he wanted a ’62 Impala Coupe for this build, but also really wanted the bubble top style design. After finding the body of the ’62, the next step was to find a high-in-demand ’61 Bubble Top Impala to use as a donor. With much luck, a ’61 presented itself and the build was ready to hit the ground running. Sending the car to Race Car Specialties, Inc. in Michigan, the transplant began. The roof and glass were cut and removed on the ’61 and transplanted onto the ’62 coupe to create this amazing custom bubble top coupe. Taking well over a year to build and looking for pure perfection to be shown at the world-famous Detroit Autorama show, this custom came about as close as one can get to perfection. After the transplant was finished, it was sent to Dun-Right Q.C. Coatings to get top-of-the-line sand blasting on the Fast Eddie’s chassis, frame, roll cage, and body. Once the body was installed on the frame, it was sent to Bobby O’Dowd in Warren, Michigan, where he went through the long process of wet sanding and polishing the entire build multiple times. With the body being nearly perfect, it was given an award-winning Pull Me Over Red paint job. Ready to attract the attention of everyone just from its new paint job, the bubble top was sent back to Race Car Specialties where the nuts and bolts of the car would be set in place.
Opening the hood can be compared to the experience of opening a box to a brand-new shiny diamond ring. With a complete chrome finish theme, a 555 Chevy big block was selected as the heart of the build, with many impressive speed parts attached to it. A TBS supercharger and a highly desirable 14/71 blower system were hooked up to the big block to help generate that scorching 1,100 horsepower. A four-port Hilborn fuel injection system was used to help with a smoother and more consistent throttle response. All these top-notch parts combine to create an experience like none other; when the engine is fired up, it is like a severe thunderstorm that comes rushing out of the custom side exhaust and consumes your soul. A Ford 9-inch rear end and one-piece driveshaft were attached to the Fast Eddie’s chassis. Wilwood disc brakes were also used in all four corners of the build.
The interior is exceptional as well. Once you step over the custom fabricated roll cage, you’ll see two well-presented and comfy black leather bucket seats. Attaching to the seats are impact restraints that meet the drag strip standards. The original restored dash was placed back in the car with the original sweep style speedometer. Two rare features in this build that not many pro-streets have are the fully functioning Vintage Air air-conditioning system and high-quality sound system.
Setting out to do exactly what McConnell had wanted to do from the start, this no-expense-spared build brought home a first place finish in the Pro-Street Division at the world famous 2020 Detroit Autorama. This is an award that many, if not all pro-street builds strive for, but almost always end up coming short. Winning one of the most desirable pro-street custom awards in the country and being featured in magazines, and on social media accounts all around the world it has rightfully earned its place amongst the very best. It is a highly desirable proven winner that will certainly look the part in any collection or contest it enters.
