Mild to wild “Outlaw” renditions of Porsche’s venerable 356-series models abound in today’s collector-car circles and have gained the acceptance of even the most committed marque enthusiasts and collectors with their imaginative upgrades, fine details and startling performance. This Porsche takes the concept several levels higher as the product of a radical transformation with 3,000 hours of labor alone by the world-famous wizards at West Coast Customs that seamlessly blends the finest classic Porsche 356 style and character with the comfort, performance and operating ease of the modern Porsche Cayman.
A featured subject of the long-running “Inside West Coast Customs” show seen by millions of viewers worldwide on the Discovery Channel, Fox Sports and MotorTrend Television, this stunning custom Porsche was hand-built by customizer Ryan Friedlinghaus and his team of artisans to impeccable standards at Burbank, California’s West Coast Customs. Starting with a 2008 Porsche Cayman as the basis for the build, its chassis was shortened by nine inches to accommodate a shorter-wheelbase 356 Coupe body. Retaining the proven Cayman drivetrain and suspension systems, this awesome creation stays true to its Porsche roots with power delivered by a liquid-cooled 2.7L, 240 HP Cayman flat-six engine and automatic gearbox. In concert with the nimble, shortened Cayman chassis, handling prowess is upgraded with KW Variant 3 suspension components and fuel is delivered to the powerful, high-revving engine with a custom fuel cell.
Additional modifications included the grafting of an additional eight inches of body width and fabrication of a custom-built windshield frame with special glass fitted all around. The car also features a removable auxiliary hardtop and custom canvas cover. Maintaining the classic Porsche look are a set of one-off custom CNC-milled aluminum 17-inch wheels mounting smooth bright hubcaps, designed to echo the appearance of stock Porsche wheels of the era. Other custom-fabricated pieces include widened front and rear bumpers and air-intake grille, complete with Porsche crest, on the rear decklid.
Despite its excellent classic looks, this is a thoroughly modern vehicle with numerous comfort and convenience amenities, including climate control, automatic transmission, power windows, electronic instruments and an awesome infotainment system comprising a seven-inch Alpine touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity and ARC Audio five-channel amplifier. The Porsche’s fully customized cockpit is luxuriously appointed in beige basket-weave full leather upholstery and the driver is greeted by the masterfully adapted Cayman dash, Porsche instrument cluster and beautiful CNC-machined billet steering wheel, complete with a classic horn ring and Porsche crest.
Finished in black, the sleek exterior of the car exudes an almost factory-built look, highlighted by twin period-style mirrors, Speedster-style bright bodyside trim spears, rocker panel trim strips, vintage “teardrop” taillights and the horizontally mounted chrome housing containing the backup light and license plate illumination light. Appropriately a featured subject on TV’s popular “Inside West Coast Customs” show, this custom Porsche is stunning on every possible level and its quality and presentation backs up this bold statement with unparalleled attention to detail. As offered, this radical Porsche has a simply captivating presence, combined with modern comfort, drivability and performance that no original car could possibly match.
