Ferrari’s 308 Dino GT4 was a trailblazer when it debuted at the 1973 Paris Motor Show due to its unmistakable, wedge styling and wholly unique look. Dino, named for Enzo Ferrari’s deceased son, was a personal labor of love and the 308 held his active interest. A visual departure from their Pininfarina-styled cars, this Dino was Ferrari’s only model styled by Bertone, the Italian designer known for Lamborghini and Lancia. This was Ferrari’s first mid-engine 2+2 (2 seats up front, 2 in rear) and the only 2+2 Ferrari ever raced with factory support. In fact, Formula One racer, Niki Lauda, had a hand in development testing as well as the altered chassis, which was based on the Dino 246 GT but stretched to include back seats. The 3.0-litre quad-cam V-8 delivered 240 horsepower, boasted a top speed of 154 mph and could reach 62 mph from a standstill in 6.4 seconds.
In this inimitable example, all-terrain utility meets iconic Italian sportscar in a singular, custom Ferrari “Safari” Dino 308 GT4. This one-of-a-kind triumph represents one of the most versatile Ferraris in existence. Inspired by the Lancia Stratos, DriverSource endeavored to craft a Dino that could handle rugged terrain as well as the blacktop. The alluring Rosso Chiaro red body rides atop coil over a 308 GT4 suspension to raise its height and is mounted by Corsa Velocita 15 x 7 wheels in 205/70VR15 Michelin tires; steering was rebuilt to perform with the configuration. Enhancements include fiberglass-enforced mud flaps, whip CB antenna, custom steel front bumper with D-hook mounts, external cage over rear bumper and quad Hella lamps. With a nod to Stratos fans, the rear decklid and window casings are wrapped in satin vinyl and grille vents are coated in black satin. Inside the cabin, factory carpet and leather trim have been reconditioned. The original seats have been reupholstered with black leather and period-correct corduroy inserts, stitched in factory pattern. Enhancements include upgraded leather luggage straps, Repa four-point seat belts, aluminum pedals, a laser-etched Safari logo on the front fender, an ABC fire extinguisher as well as a halftone gradient windshield banner, which completes the look. The undercarriage has undergone a steam-cleaning detail and is largely preserved in original condition with excellent structure. A thorough service and tune-up, totaling over $26,000, was completed in 2019. All lights, wipers, gauges, radio, power windows and horn are in proper working order. This peerless Ferrari Safari Dino 308 GT4 was a rare, factory backseat-delete example; it comes with the original service book, a copy of the owner’s manual, extensive servicing records, a reproduction took kit, an original jack/emergency roll as well as recognition in the Dino GT4 Registry. An opportunity that will not come again, this custom Ferrari “Safari” Dino is equipped to handle all the off-road adventure you throw in its path.
