Richard Rawlings, and his famed Gas Monkey Garage, transformed a 1930 Model A Tudor into a show-stopping Rat Rod back in the early days of his career. The car was lauded by the press, including a feature in Hot Rod Magazine, and it virtually put Rawlings and his Gas Monkeys on the map. When he was reunited with his treasured, early custom on an episode of his Discovery Channel TV Show, Fast N’ Loud, he decided to add a matching, custom 1964 Harley-Davidson FLH Chopper Motorcycle as well as a bespoke trailer to the winning equation. This is that Harley, traveling atop its fabulous custom ride.
The Harley-Davidson FLH Chopper Motorcycle was a game changer when it was released in 1948 thanks to its innovative hydraulic valve panhead engine; it also delivered one of the most iconic body styles the legendary motorcycle marque ever produced. When Rawlings was reunited with his Model A Tudor, no other motorcycle would suit. He procured a 1964 model then Rawlings and his team took the legend to a whole other level. Quite possibly one of Gas Monkey Garage’s most heavy fabrication builds to date, and that’s an area they are known for, the body of the entire chopper was meticulously fabricated from the frame up. The team incorporated matching front and rear wheels, which required a unique, single-sided swing arm and a one-off girder, front fork arrangement to utilize the matching wheels as well as the rear Buick radial finned brake drum. Then, they made the chopper lay frame to capture the precise look of the Model A Tudor, which was a feat in and of itself. From there, the frame was made to rest on a custom air ride system that employs heavy duty control cables for ideal actuation. Below all the hand-custom artistry, the FLH Chopper still retains its original 1,200 cc V-twin engine and manual transmission.
The body is dressed in striking patinaed green, complete with the Gas Monkey Garage logo, and sports a vintage, brown leather seat. Details abound upon close inspection. The mean green machine rolls on a set of Newstalgia wheels and Coker tires that match the Model A Tudor with unparalleled swagger. But we’re not quite finished yet. This singular, bespoke Chopper travels in style atop a one-off, purpose-built custom trailer. This is far from a mere tow-behind. This two-wheeled, low-riding contender also cruises over a custom air ride system, designed by Gas Monkey Garage. The hand-tailored chariot sports curvaceous mid-60’s Chevy C10 Truck Fenders that are patinaed to match the whole ensemble. To complete the entire look, the charismatic trailer wears matching Newstalgia wheels and Coker tires as well.
This is quite literally the whole package. One of Rawlings’ and Gas Monkey Garage’s most celebrated early customs, the 1930 Ford Model A Tudor Rat Rod, is accompanied by one of the most singular, aggressive-looking Harley-Davidson Choppers on the road and is complete with its own custom-built trailer. Simply put, this is not an opportunity you will be lucky enough to encounter again. It’s the ultimate vehicular trifecta!
