This pristine 1967 Pontiac Firebird Coupe was not only the second Firebird to ever roll off the assembly line, it was the very first Firebird Coupe! There’s even a double dose of star power to sweeten the deal. This car was owned by Chuck Alekinas, the NBA and UK basketball player, who then sold the historic beauty to Richard Rawlings, owner of Gas Monkey Garage and host of Discovery Channel’s Fast N’ Loud. Over two episodes, Rawlings chronicles the purchase and 100-point restoration of this coupe along with the first ever Firebird, a convertible which is also on offer here.
When the first Pontiac Coupe, this very car with Serial Number 002, crossed off the production line and onto the floor, it featured Firebird’s iconic Coke-bottle styling with bumpers seamlessly integrated into the racy front end, a streamlined look to the flanks as well as the eye-catching slit taillights that would combine to make the pony car an instant classic. Equipped with the original 326 cubic-inch HO V-8 engine, a step up from the base model, it boasts a four-barrel carburetor as well as a four-speed manual transmission with a center console shifter and a hood-mounted tachometer. The attached Cowl Data Plate designates this car for, “show purposes,” which means it undoubtedly toured the country as Pontiac’s new Firebird and was handled with kid gloves.
During a rotisserie restoration that was documented over two episodes of Fast N’ Loud, this legendary car was meticulously restored to its former glory with strict, original factory specifications. Every nut and bolt were refinished or replaced to a high-quality level and the finished product speeds and handles like the day it left the manufacturing plant. This iconic bird is regally dressed in its original color, silver exterior with black interior and is as beautiful as its celebrated show days. All the numbers are matching and there is a clear Texas title to accompany the sale. A chance of a lifetime, this historic 1967 Pontiac Firebird Coupe, VIN No. 223377U100002, is one of the most important Firebirds ever produced and is available to cruise the open road or cherish in a world-class collection. One thing is for sure, its value will only increase with time.
