Launched at Frankfurt in 2009, the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG succeeded the SLR McLaren as Stuttgart’s top-of-the-line, image-leading ‘supercar.’ Bristling with cutting-edge technologies and recalling the essential styling cues of the revered 300 SL, the SLS AMG was the first automobile to be completely designed from the ground up by Mercedes’ famed AMG tuning arm. Boasting AMG’s proprietary 563-horsepower 6.2-litre V-8 engine, the SLS AMG delivers shocking all-around performance in stock form and features the lightning-quick AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with full manual-shift capability. Advertised by the factory as “Part sports car, part racecar, and every part a work of art," the SLS AMG provides more than enough performance to satisfy 99 percent of its well-heeled buyers.
Seeking that elusive edge, Speedconcepts built and thoroughly upgraded this awesome 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG coupe specifically for participation in the 2013 One Lap of America. Retaining the original engine and chassis, it was fitted with a wide-body kit custom-designed and built by Speedconcepts, providing improved aerodynamics and housing massive Forgeline GA1R wheels measuring 20" x 11” front and 20" x 12” in the rear with 305/30/20 and 335/35/20 Michelin tires respectively. The GT3 racing-style wing was later replaced in favor of a neat “ducktail” style rear spoiler, more consistent with the elite Grand Touring nature of the basic SLS AMG. Underneath, Speedconcepts installed a set of KW Clubsport three-way adjustable shocks and a custom air suspension kit allowing two inches of adjustment for track use. The famous AMG-built DOHC engine was upgraded to nearly 800 horsepower with the addition of a supercharger and exhaust system supplied by Kleeman of Denmark. The interior was comprehensively upgraded to match, including Sparco fixed-back bucket seats, Schroth harnesses and a harness bar.
Completed in time for the 2013 One Lap events, the untested car performed admirably, running as high as seventh on the next-to-last day at Virginia International Raceway. Subsequent appearances included display at the 2013 SEMA Show and the Ultimate Street Car Challenge. Next, the car was semi-retired to sunny Florida, where it served as a thrilling daily driver, accumulating only an approximate 10,750 miles of use by the time of writing. While capable of explosive performance, this 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG by Speedconcepts is disarmingly easy to drive and enjoy with air-conditioning and the full complement of power-operated features and amenities one would expect of this elite driving machine.
