Ford Mustang had Carroll Shelby create a super pony car; Chevrolet was blessed with Canonsburg, Pennsylvania dealer, Don Yenko, for the new Camaro. Already recognized as a leader in road racers and high-performance Chevrolets that had been handcrafted at his dealership, the Camaro was ready-made for his talents to unleash a most fearsome super coupe. Both of Yenko’s 1967 and 1968 editions had been created under-the-radar but, for 1969, he was able to work with Chevrolet to have Camaros delivered from the factory with the L72 427 cubic-inch V-8s and special equipment installed using the COPO, or Central Office Production Order method. His Camaros included cowl induction hood, spoilers, heavy-duty four-core radiator, front disc brakes, Posi-traction rear axle with heat treated 4.10:1 gears and a larger sway bar. This final year, just 201 Camaro Super Coupes were created in the shops of Don Yenko - every one of them a motoring legend.
This spectacular pavement pounding Super Coupe finished in its original Daytona Yellow has been a part of our consignor’s collection for the past fifteen years. With a vehicle of this importance, authenticity is paramount when considering the purchase of such a potent performer. This example, 124379N600860, has been inspected and verified as true and correct by the world’s foremost authority on COPO Camaros, Ed Cuneen of the COPO Connection. Fitted from the factory with COPO 9561 for the L72 427 cubic-inch V-8 and COPO 9737 for the performance equipment added, this is 1 of the 201 Yenko Camaro Super Coupes produced for 1969. Demanding nothing less than perfection, this Yenko coupe was treated to a full and complete restoration completed in 2008. Afterward, it was shown at several local events and garnered a collection of trophies and awards including at least five Best of Show honors. For the last decade this car has been part of an extensive collection housed in climate-controlled conditions and gently exercised on a regular basis. Starting with an original L72 427 cubic-inch V-8, it is fitted with the correct GM 163 intake and topped by the proper 4346 four-barrel carburetor. Shifting is accomplished to the rugged TH400 automatic, making this 1 of just 30 Yenko Super Coupes equipped with this option. It is also fitted with the JL8 four-wheel disc brake system, tachometer, front and rear spoilers and the American Racing Torq Thrust wheels. This Camaro remains today in pristine condition and would be ready for the most intense judging or, if you are wishing for the thrill of a lifetime, the most intense road workout imaginable.
