Dubbed “Maybellene,” this amazing custom 1958 Lincoln Continental Convertible was custom-built by Dave Kindig’s famous Kindig-it Design firm to elite, award-winning standards. Beginning with a complete and already very nicely restored vehicle, “Maybellene” is the product of Kindig’s talent and the vision of the husband-and-wife owners, who commissioned the project in the quest for a perfect custom classic ride with the best classic and modern elements. Having watched various car-related television shows, including “Bitchin’ Rides” on MotorTrend TV, a visit to Dave Kindig and his team at Kindig-It Design in Salt Lake City, Utah was made to discuss a new build on a true “Jet Age” 1950s car with unique styling and iconic tail fins.
The vehicle Kindig-it Design started with was a completely restored car straight out of a museum. After hours of research and design work, the car was completely taken apart and the floor was removed. An Art Morrison custom chassis was installed and welded back into the floor, creating more structure and much improved suspension including air ride by AccuAir. The entire bottom has belly pans that are painted to match, and the suspension is detailed to a show quality finish. The exterior of “Maybellene” has undergone many subtle changes, including rear quarter panels fashioned from a second set of front fenders, deleted rear fender skirts and a new body revel as if it came this way from the factory. The front and rear bumpers were pulled in closer to the body and both front and rear grilles were custom-made and chromed. The taillights were also custom-built using LEDs and the headlights are H4 conversions. The hood has been modified by changing the body lines and inserting a custom acrylic bulge providing a view of the twin superchargers. After many thousands of hours of fabrication and body work, the car was painted in Modern Classikk “Teal Later” – one of the custom lines of automotive paints developed by Dave Kindig and Akzo Nobel – and polished to perfection. The engine bay is truly a jewelry box with all its custom-built panels and fine painted details.
Since the owner wanted a truly unique car with unusual styling, features and plenty of power, an all-aluminum, 600 cid V-12 engine was built by Ryan Falconer of Falconer Racing Engines. It is the only 1 of about 50 of these engines equipped with a supercharger (twin superchargers), generating 940 horsepower and over 1,000 pounds-feet of torque, with the massive power output sent to the rear wheels via a GM 4L80E overdrive automatic transmission. In keeping with the rest of the car, it rides on a custom Art Morrison frame with AccuAir adjustable-height suspension, Wilwood 16-inch disc brakes, and custom EVOD wheels mounting Pirelli tires. The interior was trimmed by JS Custom Interiors using Bentley Beer Foam leather upholstery. Custom Dakota Digital instruments monitor vital functions, tunes come from a killer Bluetooth Kicker audio system and a Vintage Air system provides all-weather comfort. Power amenities include the brakes, door locks, steering, convertible top and windows.
Following completion, “Maybellene” debuted at the high-profile 2017 SEMA show, where it created a huge sensation. It has earned numerous awards at top events including the Grand National Roadster Show, Sacramento Autorama and Portland Roadster Show, as well as being named a 2018 Goodguys Custom Rod of the Year award finalist. Truly, this amazing custom 1958 Lincoln Continental Mark III Convertible is the culmination of a lifelong automotive infatuation and a masterpiece from the renowned craftsmen at Kindig-it Design. Simply put, this beauty is loads of fun to drive and it never fails to turn heads everywhere it goes.
