The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing is arguably the most sought-after car the marque ever produced and is among the most desirable classic cars in existence. From its inception as a racer that won 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1952 to its limited years of street-legal production, it became a darling among the jet-set and was adored from afar by the rest. This particular car, brilliantly crafted by Kindig-it Design out of Salt Lake City, Utah, lands securely at the top of that list. Dave Kindig, designer and owner of Kindig-it Design and host of Bitchin’ Rides on MotorTrend TV, took on the Herculean task that resulted in the ultimate Mercedes Gullwing Tribute. The original tribute, purchased by the consigner, was a fiberglass build completed by Speedster Motorcars and commissioned by Rockstar Alice Cooper. The company produced around 22 of these replicas, which were less than exact to the originals and underwhelming. When Kindig got his hands on the car, he decided to completely redesign it and utilize the latest technology and hand craftsmanship available as well as incorporate original Mercedes-Benz components.
Thousands of fabrication hours were dedicated to achieving a perfect body as well as a fit that even bests the originals. As luck would have it, an original aluminum hood, only 29 of which were ever manufactured, was found in England. They grafted this rare find in and reshaped the fenders to perfect proportions. The door and roof were reshaped to accommodate an original replacement rear end. With these original panels, Kindig procured original quarter glass, gaskets and trim from Mercedes in Germany. Then he purchased and modified stainless front and rear bumpers to such precision that the fit is tighter than an original. The body is adorned with redesigned headlights that utilized custom machined rings and housings that lend a smoother shape and wholly concealed hardware. The rear features custom-built taillights that resemble stock originals except for hardware, which gives this beauty a clean, sleek look.
Below the glamorous frame lies the detailed engine bay, which hosts a GM Performance 7.4-litre LSX with 3-D printed intake tubes; every detail therein is polished and painted. Billet Specialties’ Tru-Trac accessory drive, custom valve covers are backed by a 6L90 transmission, which shifts with a one-off Tiptronic paddle-shift on the steering wheel. The “Fast Track” chassis from The Roadster Shop includes a four-wheel independent suspension, coil-over shocks, sway bars and a Dana 60 center section. Wilwood Carbon-Ceramic six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes bring to a halt the EVOD custom wheels, designed by Kindig-it Design, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires of 225/35/18 in the front and 345/30/19 in the rear. The wheels are a work of art in and of themselves; a monoblock theme with a twist, they host an original center knock-off Mercedes monolug inside.
The aesthetics are as impressive as the fabrication. The exterior is robed in Akzo Nobel’s Modern Classikk hue of Underslated Grey while the interior is dressed in Mercedes Berry red leather and German square weave carpet, crafted by the esteemed JS Custom Interiors. While there are countless modern conveniences, they remain concealed from view and the overall look captures the elegance of mid-century Mercedes luxury with panache. The Vintage Air air-conditioning travels through custom vents, the Kicker Car Audio System is beautifully concealed beneath an opulent leather luggage set in the rear that rivals even the finest offerings of Louis Vuitton. The minute, yet exacting, details are seemingly endless.
Winner of numerous awards including the John D’Agostino Crystal Cup and the Best on RS Belt at 2018 SEMA in Las Vegas, this 'Gullwing' is not merely the ultimate resto-mod, it’s quite possibly the finest tribute ever conceived. Evoking the glamour of Mercedes’ most desirable model coupled with concealed, modern conveniences, this one-of-a-kind car is poised to dazzle as an incredible road car or sit proudly in a world-class car collection.
