With the release of Smokey and the Bandit, starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field and a 1977 Firebird Special Edition Trans Am, the premium model Pontiac pony car was immortalized forever on film. Amidst a production run that spanned 1970 to 1981, the second-generation 1977 Pontiac Firebird Special Edition Trans Am is by far the most desirable today as it was when the iconic movie was on the big screen and has only appreciated in value.
The second-generation Firebirds left the coke-bottle styling behind and moved toward a more swooping, slant-nose style. By 1977, the body style featured square headlights tucked inside an angled, fiberglass front end while the front quarter panel held a stylistic, swooped cooling vent and the body tapered back to a compact rear with a nuanced, flush spoiler. As 1 of only 1,217 manufactured, this particular model boasts the biggest, baddest V-8 engine at 6.6-liters with a single four-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and has a special option four-speed manual transmission, but that’s just the technical details.
This racy Trans Am is from the personal collection of Richard Rawlings, owner of the Gas Monkey Garage and host of Discovery Channel’s Fast N’ Loud TV show. He sought out this particular car because it was virtually identical to the treasured ride he drove in high school. Included in the sale is an item also near and dear to Rawlings heart – one of the actual hats Burt Reynolds wore in the film, Smokey and the Bandit. When Rawlings hosted an episode of Fast N’ Loud that paid tribute to the iconic film, Burt came on the show and presented Rawlings with one of the original hats from the movie.
The car itself is a star in its own right. Wrapped in red with the classic Firebird crest applique, sporting desirable, special option T-tops and rolling on Snowflake Billet Wheels, the 100-point restoration work is simply flawless. Inside, the cabin is outfitted in all black with excellent original presentation. This car has all the options including the 6.6-liter V-8, four-speed transmission, air-conditioning as well as power steering, power brakes, power locks and power windows. This stellar, incredibly low mileage Trans Am drives and handles like the day it rolled off the lot and will thrill on the open road or preen its Firebird feathers in a museum-quality collection as it continues to appreciate with time. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to drive a pristine, iconic Trans Am home.
